Summary:

A mysterious portal opens in urban Tokyo, from which a fantastical army of creatures and soldiers poured forth. The Japanese Self-Defense Force manages to push the marauding army back through the portal, creatively named 'the Gate', but still needs a strategy to contain it. To that end, the JSDF sends in special task groups to establish goodwill and diplomatic relations with the locals on the other side of the Gate.

Own opinion:

I suspect the feel of the show will be similar to that of fish-out-of-water adventures like the extremely similar Outbreak Company (though it should be noted that the GATE novels came out before Outbreak Company's) and Log Horizon, except instead of superpowered adventurers, it's gunships and modern armour. So if you're looking for slightly more mature fare for your light novel adaptations, GATE is definitely one to look out for.
