The Beginning of the End

"Um... what?" Hawks couldn't believe his ears. They had to be joking.

"You have to go and join the League of Villains so we can bring them down from the inside as well as the outside." Kenji Takahashi, a commission member, repeated impatiently.

"M-me?"

"No the person next to you. Yes you, Hawks!"

"You realize I'm the number two hero right? The only thing worse than sending me would be sending Endeavor." Hawks checked again.

"Yes I am aware you are number two. But you're young. And we've been training you for years Hawks. We know we can trust you."

Yes, I definitely needed you to remind me that I haven't seen my parents in seventeen years. Thanks for taking me in. Hawks thought sarcastically. "Okay but- I'm number two! They won't trust me!"

"Yes they will. You're the only one who can do this."

"Sending me seems like a stupid idea. Why not one of the lower ranked heroes?"

"There have been rumors that some of them agree with the league's views." Kenji said, shrugging. "If we sent one of them, we would run the risk of giving them an asset instead of a liability."

So now I'm a liability, huh? "Okay, well then- Mirko! She's pretty high up there, I trust her so by default-"

"By default nothing. We trust you, we don't just automatically trust everyone you trust, although Mirko is most likely on our side." Kenji set a hand on Hawks' shoulder. "Come on Hawks, I'm tired and want to go home. Just agree to this job and I'll send you the rest of the information you need tomorrow."

"But-"

"Hawks! Just agree to this! It's not that hard!"

Oh yeah, you just want me to risk my neck and go try to join a group of murderers who would kill me at the first whisper that I was a fake- which I would be in this scenario. Not hard at all.

"Fine! I agree to this stupid plan that'll most likely get me killed!"

"Thank you. Now you'll get all the information you need tomorrow." Kenji turned and before he left Hawks' agency called back, "goodnight Hawks!"

Hawks ruffled his feathers indignantly and turned, walking back into his office.

"This is the stupidest idea I've ever heard." he muttered, collapsing onto his chair. He shifted his wings into a more comfortable position and stared at the stack of papers he had to read through.

Maybe if I stare at them just a little longer, they'll magically finish reading themselves and then send all the information to my brain so I don't have to-

Hawks' ringtone interrupted his thoughts. As he grabbed his phone he made a mental note to yell at Mirko for changing it to chickens clucking and another to change hers to 'What Does the Fox Say.'

"Pro Hero Hawks speaking." Hawks answered the phone, picking at his nails absentmindedly.

"You have night shift. Patrols, I mean." Endeavor said immediately, giving Hawks no greeting as per usual.

"Ah yes, hello to you too number one." Hawks answered, rolling his eyes. Honestly Endeavor was really starting to piss him off. He may be his hero, but he could try to be polite.

"Yes yes, hello Hawks. You've got night shift then?"

"Do I have a choice?"

"No." Endeavor hung up before Hawks could answer.

Sighing, the winged hero stretched and stood up, grabbing a pair of handcuffs he most likely wouldn't need. Crime had been really quiet recently. Almost too quiet, if Hawks was being honest. It was unnerving, as though the criminal underworld had all decided to take a vacation.

Hawks could only hope they'd be lazy when they finally decided to get back to their usual business, and not extra energized.

"I've got night shift. For the third night in a row." Hawks complained to himself as he stood on his roof and spread his wings, stretching them out before leaping over the edge of his roof and catching the wind, flying upward.

Flying always calmed him, the wind rushing through his hair and wings. He stared down at the world beneath him, silently begging someone, somewhere, to do something so he could finally actually do something. He wanted a fight- but no one seemed to be willing to participate.

"Did the criminals just decide to disappear?" Hawks muttered, landing softly on a roof. "Well that sucks."
