Get Them to Trust You

It took a while, but after about a month, Hawks had gotten around five missions in all, never with much of an explanation. The Commission was pissed at him, but what was he supposed to do about it? He couldn't help that they told him the bare minimum. He had tried to get more advanced missions that would require some sort of plan that he could give to Kenji who met up with Hawks for weekly reports, but the League was adamant about keeping him out of the loop.

It was safe to say that he was getting kind of stressed.

Five missions of emptying areas or making sure a certain person was in a certain place at a certain time and still, Hawks knew virtually nothing. He sent the Commission all his missions via text, but they didn't care about them because he never could explain why it was necessary until after the event had occurred.

I just have to get the League to trust me. Surely I can do that.

Hawks ruffled his wings then leapt off the balcony and into the cool night air for his regular night patrols.

All was going well until a hand slapped over Hawks' mouth and another gripped his hair, pulling him back. Hawks tried to flap his wings and force the person away, but their grip was too strong. He felt his eyes widen with panic and he slipped a feather into his hand, sharpening it and gripping it tightly. Hawks allowed himself to be pulled back into the alleyway, sliding the feather into a more comfortable position and readying himself to strike.

"Calm down birdie," came a soft voice. "It's just me."

For some reason unknown to the pro, Hawks didn't actually have to force himself to calm down at the familiar voice of Dabi. He just did, his shoulders relaxed and he let the feather drop to the ground.

Dabi released Hawks' mouth and hair and the hero flipped around so he was facing the villain, a soft smile settling over his features. He was so used to smiling around people that it was just natural, although it came as a shock when Hawks remembered how hard it had been to calm his nerves around Dabi at first.

"What is it?" Hawks asked, wings fluttering to resettle themselves comfortably. Dabi had crushed them a little.

"We have another mission for you. But you'll have to get time off work for this one," Dabi muttered, looking annoyed.

Whatever this mission was, for some reason, the villain wasn't too happy about it.

"Alright..." Hawks answered. "I'm sure I can figure something out, but what's the mission?"

"You'll know when you need to. Right now you just need to get an excused absence off work for the weekend."

Hawks felt himself nodding. "Alrighty!" he knew it was too much of a push of luck if he demanded answers. Kenji and the Commission would just have to be patient.

Dabi smirked darkly. "This'll be very interesting..." he murmured, a shiver running down Hawks' spine.

This was going to be very dangerous, and that was certain.

"And why do you need the entire weekend off?" Kenji demanded.

"For that mission thing you gave me about a month ago." Hawks answered pointedly.

Kenji's eyes narrowed. "I see. Come with me."

Hawks followed the Commission member into his office.

"I don't have any information other than that I need time off." Hawks said as soon as Kenji closed the door. "That's all they told me."

Kenji sighed exasperatedly. "The point of this mission was for you to inform us of their plans so we could stop them in the long run."

"I know."

"But you haven't even given us one actual plan, just a certain part of it."

"I know, but-"

"You're failing miserably on your end and we aren't doing much better on ours, and you're-"

"I know!" Hawks interrupted angrily. "I know, alright?"

"Just get us more information, Hawks," Kenji sighed.

"I told you they wouldn't ever trust me," Hawks grumbled.

"Then make them trust you. We don't care what you do. Who you hurt. Who you lie to. Just do something, okay?" Kenji left before Hawks could answer.

Hawks' shoulders slumped and he let himself slide to the floor, wrapping his wings around himself. He didn't even know why he felt so upset right now, but he just wanted to hide in his feathers and never come out again.

Stop that. Heroes don't feel that way. Hawks chided himself before standing up and ruffling his wings.

An easy-going smile slipped onto Hawks' face as he exited the office, all his doubts and sadness pushed down to the depths of his soul, just like he had been trained to do.
