Friendship Bracelets

Quick A/N: In this chapter there's a bracelet, basically it's the pattern of the bracelets above! It's also in a future chapter so 'Chevron' is that ^

Hawks was certainly annoyed. He was just about done with there being no one around to take his annoyance out on. All that had happened the whole time he'd been on patrol (only about an hour as the time currently stood) was one particularly rude bird had flown right into him.

And someone had robbed some poor little old lady, but the damn bird. Hawks was fairly certain he couldn't arrest it for the disrespect, but he sure as hell did try. Or he would have if the little old lady hadn't gotten robbed at that exact moment. Poor woman, and of course Hawks had gotten her her purse back, but couldn't she have waited until after he found out if hand cuffs could tighten over a bird's legs to scream for help?

"Apparently not." Hawks sighed aloud, flipping over in the sky so his wings were beneath him.

Hawks flipped himself back over when the backwards flying position came to be too much work to stay in. He landed softly on a roof, folding his wings back as he neared the edge and gazed down at the people going about their daily lives.

Though he'd never say it out loud, Hawks longed to be one of those people. To just have a normal life. To escape this hero driven society- or perhaps just escape being one of the heroes.

But it was all he knew. Hawks wouldn't know how to be a normal civilian. Since the age of six he'd been training to be a hero. Not just his quirk, but his attitude too. That may have been why the Commission trusted him. They knew he couldn't possibly betray them- he wouldn't know how to. The Commission had broken poor old Keigo down to almost nothing, then built him back up as a hero- as Hawks.

"...we've been training you for years Hawks. We know we can trust you."

Was that it? Was that his purpose? Be a good little hero until we need you for something, because we know you won't crack. That's what you were made for.

Hawks shook the thoughts away. Those weren't very heroic thoughts at all. He had so much more to be happy about than the average citizen. Be happy.

A smile lit up Hawks' face as he flew down to the middle of the street, deciding to interact with people for a while.

"Mommy! Mommy wait!" A little girl called out, sprinting into the middle of the street.

Hawks saw her mother turn around, saw her eyes widen in fear. "Ichika!" the mother screamed a warning, holding her hand out as if to snatch her daughter away from danger.

And the car. Hawks dove for the kid, using his wings to speed himself up as much as possible. Hawks reached out, arms stretching as far as possible, pulling the kid into his chest, wings flapping hard, both the child and Hawks lifting into the sky, just as the car swept by beneath them.

The little girl screamed as she rose into the air, eyes squeezing shut, the brush of death making her heart hammer in her ribs. She twisted in Hawks' arms, turning into his chest and hugging him tightly, breathing heavily into his chest, her hands gripping his shoulders as tight as possible, Hawks fighting back the urge to push her away- her fingernails were pretty long, and they kind of hurt, pinching into his skin, but he understood that she was scared- how could she not be? She was almost just hit by a car.

"Shh, hey, you're alright." Hawks mumbled, softly smoothing out her hair with a free hand. "It's okay, I've got you."

The girl looked up then, her eyes widening before she hid her face in Hawks' shoulder.

Hawks landed softly on a sidewalk and tried to set the girl down, but she kept on hugging him, her face buried in his shoulder and her tears watering his clothes. Hawks tightened his grip on her, patting her back as she hiccuped and continued crying, mumbling, "Mommy please come get me... I'm scared."

"Hey what's your name?" Hawks asked in a soft voice, hoping to distract the girl.

The girl coughed and answered in a muffled voice. "I-Ichik-ka..." she stuttered out.

"That's such a pretty name! Perfect for such a pretty girl!" Hawks exclaimed, patting her head again.

Hawks felt Ichika smile. "T-thank you."

Hawks simply continued to pet the girl's hair, smiling as well. He watched as her mother came running over, along with the man from the car, a terrified look on both of their faces.

"I'm so so so sorry- thank you so much for saving her Hawks!" the man said, coming up to Hawks and bowing repeatedly. "I didn't see her!"

"Don't worry, it's all good!" Hawks beamed. "Just make sure you pay extra attention at crosswalks, yeah?"

"Of course!" the man kept bowing and apologizing profusely.

"Thank you so much for saving my daughter! I had thought she was right next to me!" Ichika's mother exclaimed. "That is the last time you cross the road without holding my hand, okay?"

Ichika nodded, still clutching Hawks.

"Hey Ichika, your mama's here." Hawks said softly.

Ichika nodded again, hesitating before releasing Hawks and jumping out of his arms and running up to her mom quickly, wrapping two arms around her waist.

"That was so scary." Ichika said. Her mom picked her up, hugging her tightly. The sight warmed Hawks' heart.

"I know baby. Lord I know." the mom whispered back, squeezing her daughter tightly before setting her down. "Thank you again Hawks." the mother said, gripping her daughter's hand tightly.

"I'm so so sorry!" the man apologized again, bowing to the mother, Ichika, and Hawks over and over.

"It's okay, I got to meet my hero!" Ichika exclaimed. Her eyes widened as though she had just realized something. "Mommy, I got to meet my hero!"

"I know." her mother responded, amused.

Ichika reached into her pocket and pulled something out, then made her way to Hawks, whatever it was clutched in her fist.

"I was gonna give this to my friend, but I'll just make her a new one." Ichika said, pushing something into Hawks' hand. "You can have it! Please wear it!" Ichika added.

Wear what? Hawks wondered. He opened his fist under the apologetic eyes of the driver, amused eyes of the mother, and excited eyes of Ichika, revealing a bunch of string, all knotted together to make a 'V' like design.

"Wh-what is it?" Hawks asked, hoping he wouldn't upset the girl but genuinely curious.

"It's a friendship bracelet, silly!" Ichika said. "Does it not look like one?" her eyes filled with tears.

"Oh." Hawks breathed. "No, it does! I've just never gotten one before..."

Ichika stopped crying quickly. "Then you have to wear it!"

Hawks smiled at her and tied the bracelet around his wrist. "What if I made you one and sent it back?" Hawks asked.

Ichika looked very excited and she turned back to her mother. "Mommy, mommy can-"

"You don't have to Hawks..." the mother said, looking up at Hawks.

"Oh it's no problem! Come check this bush," Hawks sent a feather over to a bush directly to his left. "Every day and as soon as I learn how to make one of these, I'll put it there."

Ichika beamed. "I will!"
