Chapter thirty- reckoning

HARMONY'S POV:

"Wakey wakey, time to tapey" a sinister voice said to me through a dull and dark view.

I felt incredibly drowsy and severally upset and for a second I had no idea why, but when the scary nightmare fuel face came into view only inches away from me, I remembered every since second.

I tried to move away from him but of course I was bound and gagged with duct tape to a rolling chair that seemed all too familiar to me. It was a GCND issued office chair. A chair that I had been sitting in for years.

Slowly I began to recognize the space. We were in the emergency broadcast area of the building, where you could post a state of emergency through the city on practically any device connected to the Internet. That's how he must have done it before.

I saw a camera pointing toward my face, and the only light came from the bright spotlight above my head, making the rest of the room seem pitch black.

I began to struggle violently against my restraints, I knew what was going to happen if I didn't get the fuck out of here. No matter if that crazy bat tried saved my life again, he would still kill me. He had already killed enough people, including Ruth.

"Relax," he said slowly "I know even I get stage fright, but there's no need to be camera shy. Just think that all the people watching are wearing big happy smiles, that's what they will be wearing soon anyways."

I saw Edward step into the light from my left. He glared at me with hatred, the two lumps I had given him in our brawl were on the top of his head, right above his crossed eyebrows. For a moment I was satisfied with my work, at least if I didn't make it out, I tried my hardest not to die.

"Time to go live!" The Joker spoke in a spectacular voice "riddle boy your behind the camera."

They were going to video me. I felt sick. The whole city was going to see me weak and exposed, looking desperate and afraid. Isn't it bad enough that the people who know me think I'm pathetic, now the whole city will know.

I can just hear the conversations now 'the girl dating Bruce Wayne is so weak and lame he doesn't deserve a girl like her'. That's even if Bruce still wanted to date me, after all the bullshit and emotional torment, he probably hated me.

"3..2..1 ACTION!"

The large red sign that said LIVE lit up red and I looked into the camera. I chose not to look like I was about to cry or throw up, which was how I was really feeling, and instead I wore a pair of knotted eyebrows, and a scrunched up nose. I tried to put all the rage I felt in my situation to a depiction of my eye and nose because that's all I had.

"Hello Batsy, Bataroo, batterman, .....Batman! I've got a date with you and just to make sure you didn't stand me up, I brought a friend along," the Joker stepped next to me and began to stroke my hair, which make me freeze up and pull away as fast as I possibly could.

The Joker looked down at me and smirked "now Harmony, is there anything you'd like to say?" Without warning he ripped the duct tape off my mouth and along with it all the peach fuzz around my lips. Well at least I wouldn't have a mustache.

This was my one chance to say anything I wanted to the whole city, and to Batman, Bruce, Gordon, Daisy, and the rest of the people I know. So I thought for about ten seconds and then I opened my mouth and said something straight from my heart "FFFUUUUCCCCKKK YOU!"

He simply ignored me and turned back to the camera "now you hurry along Batman, or I'm going to turn her pretty little frown upside down."He then smashed the multi-thousand dollar camera into the floor and started hysterically laughing again.

"I've got it," Edward said coming out from behind the camera, carrying a flash drive.

"Good, now get your ass up to the tower and broadcast that tape over the whole damn city, this is going to be a fun night."

Edward nodded, looking not so amused to be a lap dog. I could tell he wanted to be in the lime light. He wanted to be the one in front of the camera holding me hostage. Not the maniac who wanted to kill everyone in the city.

Still he obeyed, leaving the room with a scowl.

I guess there was nothing left for me to do except wait. Wait to find out if I live or not. Most likely not. I wonder if Batman would even come for me. We had only a few meetings and each one was short, strange, and most times ended up being me faced  with a near death situation.

Come to think of it, there was the robbery at Macy's, where I met Batman that started all of this. After that I think was that time at the club. Then when the police station was attacked Batman was there to stop us from getting killed. Now here I am yet again, playing the damsel in distress card.

"What makes you think he'd come for me?" I asked curiously.

"I keep an eye on Batsy, and when that eye spotted a series of coincidences I kept another eye on you, and that's then the two came together at the lips," he made a fake kissing noise.

"You were watching us kiss?" I said in disbelief.

"Not me, but someone, and when this little bird told me Batsy had a soft spot, I had to take the opportunity to for fill my lifelong dream."

"What are you going to do if he comes? Poison him? Kill him?"

He laughed "kill him?! Never. If I don't have my toy to play with then how will I ever be able to have any fun."

"Then what?! Kill me? Just to see him suffer," I said with a shakier voice.

"No, well, yes, but that's not what I really want."

"THEN WHAT!" I yelled fed up with this round about conversation.

He smiled "I want to know who he is. I want to know all the people he knows, what he does for a living, and I want to ruin his life from the inside out. Seeing him in fear is what makes me smile, I want to look into his eyes with the mask off and see how scary he can really be."

I can't believe I was about to think this, but for once I was in agreement with a psychotic killer. Well not all in agreement, but I did want to see the face of the guy I had made out with and who saved my life on multiple occasions.

The Joker noticed the look on my face "you haven't seen his face either have you?"

I didn't say anything but the look on my face was answer enough. The same time the Joker was going to find out the Batman's identity, was the same time as me. All the people in his life will be in jeopardy and it will be because of me.

The Joker stood behind me and made a rectangle with his hands "picture it, Batsy standing there, taking his mask off and finally the lovers will meet face to face, only to be ripped apart. Such a tragedy. Ooohhh how Shakespeare would be jealous."

"your sick."

"Yes a little, but you have to admit that it was a great story."

Maybe thirty minutes passed of me just sitting there trying not to cry. After a while my wrists were getting swear underneath the tape and I thought I could feel the glue coming loose.

There was no point in even trying to escape. I lost all hope. Batman wasn't even going to show up or he would have been here by now. At least I was alone for the last ten to twenty minutes, because for no apparent reason he left the room and hasn't come back since.

Four times almost started to ball my eyes, but I reminded myself not to look weak in front of the Joker. Even if he wasn't here he could walk in at any time and see me with tears down my face. If I was going to die I'll do it with dignity.

Suddenly I heard a loud bang echo through the room and the spotlight that had been shining above me went out. Slowly the rest of the previously bitch black room came into view through the large glass windows of the night.

In the far corner of the room I saw a black figure move along the edge of the room. It had to be him, Batman. I really hoped it was. From the other side of the room I could hear various banging and other noises you would associate with fighting.

"Hello?" I called out into the room, hoping whomever was in here could help me.

Unfortunately my call was returned, but what emerged from the blackness is not what I wanted to see. It was the Joker, smiles and all, holding a gun in his hand, probably the water gun.

"It's time."

Right when he said that the large glass windows shattered into a thousand pieces and glittered in the moonlight, dancing across the room in a shower crystals.

Through the glass came Batman.

He landed on his two feet with a pound and his face was painted with a furious expression. He didn't even look at me as he began to storm straight at the Joker.

"Now now, let's not be hasty," the Joker said pointing the water gun toward my head.

Batman looked at me with sad eyes and stopped in his tracks. Why did he care about me so much.

"Doesn't this just make you so nostalgic? I can almost smell the piss coming from that interrogation room."

"what do you what," Batman growled in a low serious voice.

"What do I want? Well it's simple really, I want to ruin your life."

"Let her go she has nothing to do with this!

"oh please, she has everything to do with this, if she has anything to do with you, then that means I can hurt you, so much fun don't you think?"

Batman stayed completely still, his hands in fists, and steam almost coming straight from his ears. His eyes were dead inside, he was so angry, looking for blood even. All because of me.

"Take off the mask," the Joker spoke bluntly.

Again Batman said absolutely nothing but this time it was different. He unclenched his fists and his furrowed brows unwound. He looked genuinely scared.

"Cmon, I'm dying to know who's under there, I've been waiting a long while to meet face to face. Smile to scowl."

He looked conflicted. He knew what would happen if he didn't and he knew what would happen if he did. I wasn't going to be the reason his identity was exposed. I'd sooner die.

"Don't do it, my life isn't worth it."

The Joker looked at me with disgust "seriously, Batsy, you don't want more blood on your hands do you, cross my heart and swear to die I won't kill her. If you take off the mask."

My heart bounded in my chest harder by the second, what I was about to say was entirely not true but I had to say it "you need to save people, let me die, I mean nothing to you."

There was a moment of silence in the room and all of the sudden he touched the top of his cowl and began to pull back.

"What are you doing!" I screamed.

"You mean more to me than you think."

He dropped the back cowl on the floor next to him like he was wearing an entirely different face. I was almost afraid to look up and see what I did.

Bruce Wayne.

"I knew it!" The Joker squealed "it had to be you!"

"Bruce?" My voice cracked.

"Harmony," he repeated.

I felt sick. This whole time, I was dating batman, I was being lied to by the love of my life, all those times, it's so obvious now, how could I have been to stupid. Of course Bruce was batman, the disappearance right before batman shows up, the mysterious leaving and coming back with no explanation, and the means to acquire the technology Batman, or Bruce, must use.

"This whole time?"

"I wanted to protect you," he quickly spoke to excuse his actions.

I didn't know what to feel. On one side I saw the reason behind his actions, and on the other I didn't. I felt like I didn't even know him anymore. It's so unreal, unbelievable, that the two men I fell in love with are the same person.

"This is all very interesting, but hello, I'm the one with the weapon here."

I was really fed up with the Joker, like over the limit mad.

"Oh my god, shut the fuck up it's a water gun you freaking loser!"

"Does this feel like a water gun to you?" He said right before firing the very real gun into my left foot.

I screamed, like any person would, in pure agony. Right as I screamed the door in which I heard the fighting and banging around before burst open, and a man dressed in orange and black armor walked in. Not another one.

"who the hell are you?" The Joker said sincerely confused.

"Your worst fucking nightmare," he said back.

Right before he could tackle the Joker two men from behind the door dressed in clown masks jumped on him and they all started to fight. Bruce however took the opportunity to jump on the Jokers back and slam him on the ground.

I wasn't just going to wait around and get killed, I finally got sweaty and sticky enough to slip loose of the tape on my arms and untie the rest of my body. I ran across the room, or rather limped across the room, dragging my bum leg behind me.

I was going to run away but looking back and seeing Bruce getting pummeled in the face made me stop. I looked down next to me and found a boom mic laying on the ground. I broke off the soft part at the end and as fast as my one leg could get me, I run up behind the Joker and gave him a really hard smack on the back of the head. Bruce gave me a thankful look, and then he quickly went back to punching the Joker over and over in the face.

Still the man smiled every time he took a punch, more blood coming from his mouth and nose, but still a smile shone through. Then he even started to laugh. Hysterically even. He laughed so much that Bruce stopped hitting him and looked at the Joker in confusion.

"Hit me all you want Brucie, but you know you aren't going to kill me, you'll put me away again and I'll get out again, and again I'll kill more people and again I'll destroy this city."

Bruce pulled him off the ground and slammed him against a wall.

"You know Bruce your not as scary without the mask, kinda cute actually, I can see why the ladies are so into it."

"Give me one good reason why I shouldn't kill you right here, right now!"

He shrugged "Hum, because you can't, it's against everything you stand for, it's against your code."

Bruce loosened his grip on the Joker, realization hit and he knew just as well as the Joker that he couldn't bring himself to take another man's life. No matter how twisted or horrible that man was.

"It's not against my code."

Out of nowhere a giant sharp blade flew across the room and found its way straight into the Jokers heart. He stiffened up for a second and looked down at the sword.

"What a twist ending," were his last words.

After that he fell limp to the ground. Dead. Gone forever.
