A heart with Wings

To Gotham by Midnight Part 6

A couple of days later

I sat in the Bat cave looking at the local police reports things had started running a lot smoother since I started sharing the work load with the others and sharing the work load had given me some time to heal fighting Bane was basically like trying to fight a Tank, and speaking of Bane he had been sent back to Stonegate penitentiary where they had a special cell waiting for him.

The transmitter in the Bat cave rings I answer it is Bat Girl

"Hey Black Widow thought that I would let you know your theory about where Clay face was hiding was right he is now frozen in a cryogenic pod on his way to Arkham" Bat Girl tells me it's good that was the last thing on my list to do before Bruce gets back

"Good work Bat Girl why don't you take the rest of the night off" I smile at the young girl on the screen but her face showed a lot of concern

"Are you ok Natasha Dick told me about the show down with Bane that couldn't have been easy like even the big guy struggles to go hand to hand with Bane" the young crime fighters concern was indeed touching but I've had much worse but she doesn't need to know that

"Everything is fine Bat Girl but seriously go home be with your father and oh have a good night" things were quiet and Nightwing and Robin were already on their patrol around the city if anything cropped up they could handle it

"Thank you Black Widow night" she ends her transmission when suddenly a silver tray of tea is placed next to me the smell was already music to my taste buds

"Earl Grey?" I ask Alfred as he poured the delicious tea into a tea cup I also noticed several biscuits on the tea tray I swear Alfred is a literal angel

"Indeed Ms Romanoff to help you sleep" he replies and passes me the tea cup

"You're just like him Ms Romanoff" Alfred suddenly says what does he mean by that I look at him confused

"You're a born leader, you never give up and all the young ones love you they look up to you I suppose you're like a mother figure to them" Alfred says his words had really touched my heart much like the tea it never really dawned on me how far I had come since my previous life as an assassin I had everything that I had always wanted.

I'm suddenly woken up by someone putting a blanket over me I hadn't even realised that I had fallen asleep must have been the tea, again.

I open my eyes to see Bruce smiling down at me

"Sorry I didn't want to wake you, but you looked cold" I wasn't but I didn't bother saying that Instead I wrap my arms around him in a giant hug I feel him return the hug

"It's good to see you back in one piece" I tell him although he looked a bit dishevelled. I observe his war torn face it was littered with some deep cuts and bruises

"Come on big guy" I smile at him as I get up from the comfy chair and grab his arm as I lead him over to the medical table usually he would reject medical treatment I was exactly the same but he trusted me.

I pick up some cotton wool and disinfectant but he will most certainly need stitches on the large cut going down the left side of his face

"How bad is it Romanoff?" he asks seeing my reaction and although the disinfectant was painful on the cuts he hid it well

"I would recommend steering clear of mirrors for a while and avoid the tabloids but it shouldn't scar" I tell him he seemed glad to be back

"I hear you did a good job Natasha" he must have already spoken to Alfred

"Yes those guns will never see the light of day and Bane is back in a cell block at Stonegate especially for him, but I couldn't have done it without a bit of help" I tell him he smiles at me as I finish stitching up his face, he painfully lifts himself up from the medical table

"A good leader always knows how to work with others it great to see that I can always rely on you with the safety of Gotham city" I pat his shoulder playfully as he winces

"Always Partner" I tell him he walks over to a raggedy looking bag that was sitting in the passengers seat of the Bat Mobile he holds something wrapped in a brown cloth and hands it to me

"What is it?" I ask my friend in which he just shrugs

"Unfortunately the gift shop was closed and they were all out of fridge magnets but I saw this and thought of you" I open the item it was pretty heavy that was because it was a rock but it wasn't just any rock it was glazed in some sort of red gem shell and when a ray of light hit it the gem shone like a diamond it was beautiful

"It is from Apokalips its harmless and grows all over the planet its one of the toughest materials to exist sort of like you I mean you can always use it as a paper weight or if that doesn't work for you I'm pretty sure it will make a very painful projectile weapon" he says I smile he knew me too well and in his own way it was a very sweet gesture,

I grin at him "I love it thank you"

Bruce Wayne's POV

Home Sweet Home, I enter the Bat Cave through the waterfall and park the Bat mobile on the platform when I am quickly approached by Alfred

"Master Bruce you're back" he exclaims then he stops in his tracks when he sees my injured face but it looked worse than it actually was I've had worse

"You need medical attention" Alfred protests but it was mostly just minor flesh wounds I hold up my hand to stop him

"It's alright Alfred I'll take care of it" I tell him he stops and rolls his eyes frustrated at my stubbornness. I look over into the corner I see Natasha fast asleep at the Bat Computer must have drunk Alfred's special Earl Grey Tea

"How have things been?" I ask Alfred I checked the police scanner when I returned to Gotham things seemed quiet I'm guessing that fire arms shipment sunk through

"Miss Romanoff has been extremely efficient in holding down the fort at first she was hesitant to put the young ones in danger but eventually she worked with them to bring down Bane and the Gun runners" wait did he just say Natasha fought Bane I hope she's ok

"I'll be upstairs" Alfred tells me as he leaves me and Romanoff.

I walk or more or less limp over to the Bat Computer I look at the small figure slumped in my chair she was quite the sleeping beauty except for the healing bruise on her forehead she was really tough she had to be to survive in such a cruel world,

I thought I saw her shiver a bit so I pick up a nearby blanket it was grey and a bit tatty but it was warm as I place the blanket over her Natasha's icy blue eyes burst open in alarm but when she sees it's me she relaxes

"Sorry I didn't want to wake you, but you looked cold" I apologize but she didn't seemed too bothered

"It's good to see you back in one piece" she says as she carefully examines my injuries

"Come on Big Guy" she says as she leads me towards the medical table I take off my cowl which was hanging around my neck usually I didn't like others treating my injuries unless it was Alfred but Natasha was always gentle she smirks as she treats my cuts with some disinfectant which really stung but I concentrate on the Russians beautiful face I never realized how beautiful her facial features were like a marble statue you would see in a museum or an angel in a church

"How bad is it Romanoff?" I jokingly ask her she sighs

"I would recommend steering clear of mirrors for a while and avoid the tabloids but it shouldn't scar" well that's a small relief I suppose

"I hear you did a good job Natasha" I knew that she wouldn't fail she was the best there was

"Yes those guns will never see the light of day and Bane is back in a cell block at Stonegate especially for him, but I couldn't have done it without a bit of help" I smile at her all good leaders knew when to except help

"A good leader always knows how to work with others it great to see that I can always rely on you with the safety of Gotham city" I tell her not that I ever had any doubt she finishes with the stitches

"Always partner" she pats my shoulder I wince she was a lot stronger than she ever let on then suddenly I remember I get up from the medical table and walk over to the Batmobile I pick up a package that I warped in a newspaper I hand the object to her

"What is it?" she asks me curiously

"Unfortunately the gift shop was closed and they were all out of fridge magnets but I saw this and thought of you" she opens the package revelling a beautiful red gem her eyes widen "It is from Apokalips its harmless and grows all over the planet its one of the toughest materials to exist sort of like you I mean you can always use it as a paper weight or if that doesn't work for you I'm pretty sure it will make a very painful projectile weapon" I knew she would find that amusing she smiles at me warmly

"Thank you I love it" she says,

I just wish that I had the balls to say "And I love you" but unfortunately the words never leave my mouth.
